Parent FAQ

You’ve come to the right place for answers, brave adventurers! We’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions about our Pack. Read on to unravel the mysteries of Cub Scouting!

Based in Silver Spring, MD, Cub Scout Pack 250 is a family-friendly scouting community of over 50 years where kids in grades K–5 learn, explore, and grow together. We focus on building character, developing leadership skills, and fostering a love for the outdoors through fun, hands-on activities like camping, hiking, STEM projects, and community service. Our pack is supported by dedicated parent volunteers and guided by the values of Scouting—helping children gain confidence, make friends, and discover new adventures along the way. Our Charter Organization is Transfiguration Parish, and we are part of the White Oak District within the National Area Council Area.

We welcome a diverse group of boys and girls of any faith between Kindergarten and 5th grade.

Our Pack primarily supports K-5 students in the following Montgomery County elementary school areas:

  • Drew ES
  • Page ES
  • Stonegate ES

If you live near, but don’t attend, one of these schools, you are welcome to join us as well.

Your scout will join a Den, a small group of children who are all in the same grade. Dens meet about once a month and are led by a Den Leader. These dens of Kindergarten though 5th graders make up our Pack. Besides these monthly den get-togethers, we also have a Pack event once a month. These larger Pack events bring together scouts of all ages and often help everyone complete parts of the adventures needed to earn their next rank, including hikes, camping trips, community service projects and more!

Pack 250 meets during the Montgomery County school year. We aim to have a Pack event or meeting about once a month. In addition to pack events, individual dens meet about once a month which are scheduled separately by the den leaders.

For our scouts, a responsible adult partner needs to attend and actively participate in all meetings. We welcome and encourage sibling participation in all of our family events. Everyone is welcome to join the fun!

Within our pack, we have several dens. Each den corresponds to a grade level between Kindergarten and 5th grade. For more information on the dens listed below, and to learn how to advance through the rank structure, visit the Cub Scout site

  • Lion Den – Kindergarten
  • Tiger Den – 1st Grade
  • Wolf Den – 2nd Grade
  • Bear Den – 3rd Grade
  • Webelos Den – 4th Grade
  • Arrow of Light Den – 5th Grade

Here’s a breakdown of the adventure costs:

  • Annual National and NCAC Council Dues: $165
  • Annual Pack Dues: $85
  • Uniform with Patches: About $25 per year (if your scout wears his shirt for two years)
  • Cub Scout Handbook (Optional): $20 – $30
  • Additional Fees for Camping and Special Events: These vary, but are typically $5 – $10 per person for each large event.

Your yearly cost will be roughly $200 – $250 per scout. We try our best to keep these adventures affordable for all!

Our Pack dues are super important for making all our big events happen! They help cover things like renting facilities for our gatherings and buying supplies for exciting activities (like those awesome Pinewood Derby cars and Rain Gutter Regatta boats!). Sometimes, larger events like camping trips might have a small extra fee to help with food. Plus, a portion of the Pack dues helps us purchase those cool patches, slides, and other uniform items your scout earns as they advance!

Yes!

No youth will be turned away for an inability to pay the Council Participation Fee or NCAC camp fees. NCAC has always provided financial assistance when needed so all youth can participate in the program.

Your child’s safety is our top priority. All leaders in Pack 250 are trained and background-checked, and we follow the guidelines outlined in Scouting America’s Barriers to Abuse and Safe Scouting policies. This includes two-deep leadership (no one-on-one situations), age-appropriate activities, and strict youth protection training (Safeguarding Youth Training) for all adult volunteers. You can learn more about these measures on the Scouting America Safe Scouting website.

Completing your Safeguarding Youth Training is a breeze!

Safeguarding youth is a value at the core of the Scouting movement. It is vital to maintain a culture of active supervision, awareness, and safety at all levels of Scouting. Safeguarding Youth training will help you prevent harm to youth, is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers and is a joining requirement.

You can take the training and test online after logging into your Scouting America My.Scouting account.
